Jazz Along the River
Summer is here and with it once again comes Johnstown’s Jazz Along the River. Now in its 11th year, Jazz Along the River is a free concert series providing food and entertainment on the fourth Friday of every month, from May through September.
“This is a community event; an opportunity to spend time with your neighbors and to make new friends”, says series founder and organizer Monsignor Raymond Balta.
The parish kitchen opens at 5:00PM and music plays from 6:00PM to 9:00PM. This year’s schedule is as follows:
- May 22: Frank Filia
- June 26: Lou Stein and All That Jazz
- July 24: Harold Betters Jazz Quartet
- August 28: Jazz in Your Face Sextet
- September 25: Jim and Jimmies Jam Session Band
Monsignor Balta attributes the longevity of the series to the format. “It’s informal, free; just listen to some music, get something to eat in our fellowship hall, and socialize.”
Festivities are based at Saint Mary’s Parish Power Street (click here for a map) in the city’s West End.

My wife and I are actually planning a quick trip to Johnstown tomorrow from here in Lancaster. Been reading a number of things about the hope for creating a conducive environment there for artists (we both are). But, short of spending some days there talking to artists, I’m wondering if anyone from Johnstown could comment on the reality of this lovely hope. Any and all information or comments would be greatly appreciated. I’m eager to learn.
